Trump Vows Two-Month Ultimatum as Iran Offers Nuclear Assurances
(MENAFN) Iran has expressed willingness to provide guarantees that its nuclear program remains peaceful, even as U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies pressure for Tehran to completely abandon uranium enrichment.
According to reports, Trump issued a two-month ultimatum to Iran back in March, demanding a new nuclear agreement or face the threat of military action, including potential “bombing” if the deal is rejected. The U.S. outlined its conditions in a formal letter following five rounds of talks facilitated by Oman.
“We are ready to give assurances to all sides about peaceful nature of our nuclear program,” stated Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Iran's chief negotiator in the ongoing discussions with Washington, during a Monday press conference held in Egypt.
On Sunday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff “has sent a detailed and acceptable proposal” to Iran, emphasizing that “it’s in their best interest to accept.” She also reaffirmed President Trump’s firm stance, declaring, “Iran can never obtain a nuclear bomb.”
Tehran, however, perceives the proposal as unbalanced and unworkable, a source familiar with the negotiation process told a news agency.
“Iranians were dismayed to see such a fanciful, one-sided text that is so out of touch with reality,” the source noted.
