Trump Expresses Willingness to Meet with Putin, Zelensky
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump is willing to meet with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Türkiye, as part of a broader diplomatic push to help end the Kremlin's war in Ukraine, the White House confirmed on Monday.
“The president has said he's open to it if it comes to that, but he wants both of these leaders and both sides to sit down at the table together,” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
Her statement followed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s announcement earlier Monday, in which he proposed hosting a summit with the leaders of the United States, Russia, and Ukraine.
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, Erdogan emphasized that his “greatest wish” is to bring Putin and Zelenskyy together in either Istanbul or Ankara. “I would even like to bring [US President Donald] Trump along,” he said, referring to ongoing talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators taking place in Istanbul.
Erdogan praised recent developments between the warring nations, highlighting the success of the latest diplomatic efforts. “It was truly a magnificent meeting. As a result of this meeting, although there had been prisoner exchanges before, this time the number of prisoner exchanges exceeded a thousand. Beyond exceeding a thousand, there was also the return of some bodies from Russia and Ukraine outside of this prisoner exchange. These numbers are also very large. We are truly proud of this,” Erdogan said.
Looking ahead to the possibility of a trilateral summit in Türkiye, Erdogan added that he “will also meet with them at this meeting so that we can turn Istanbul into a center of peace.”
