Trump Confirms Patriot Missiles Headed to Ukraine
This transfer falls under a NATO-supported agreement, whereby the United States will be completely reimbursed for its role in supplying the defense systems.
"They're already being shipped. They're coming in from Germany and then replaced by Germany," Trump stated to journalists following an event held in Pennsylvania. He further clarified, "In all cases, the United States gets paid back in full."
Trump went on to explain that the compensation would be provided either via NATO channels or directly from European Union nations.
He stressed the financial neutrality of the arrangement for the US, saying, "we’re not going to have any more investment to make. We’re getting our money back in full."
Touching on the broader context of the conflict, Trump noted the human toll of the war and expressed hope for a resolution.
"If we can make a (peace) deal, that would be great. We’re saving 5,000 or 6,000 soldiers a week -- they’re Russian and Ukrainian soldiers, not American soldiers," he commented.
He added with concern, "It’s a shame -- last week they say 7,100 soldiers, both Russian and Ukrainian, were killed."
The announcement came during a meeting on Monday in the Oval Office between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump disclosed details of the arrangement, stating, "We made a deal today…We are going to be sending them (Ukrainians) weapons, and they are going to be paying for them. The US will not be having any payment made. We're not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they're going to be paying for it."
This initiative marks a shift toward burden-sharing in defense aid, reinforcing Trump’s long-standing call for greater financial participation by NATO allies.
