Kremlin reacts to Trump’s Ukraine deadline alteration
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has acknowledged U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to shorten his deadline for a Ukraine peace agreement and to escalate threats against Moscow, according to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Trump recently reduced his initial 50-day timeframe to just 10–12 days, warning that Russia could face harsh new sanctions if no deal is reached. He also threatened to impose 100% tariffs on countries that continue trading with Russia and indicated he no longer sees value in speaking with President Vladimir Putin unless it’s for substantive negotiations.
“We’ve taken note of President Trump’s latest comments,” Peskov said on Tuesday, without offering a specific judgment on the matter. He emphasized that while Russia’s military operation in Ukraine continues, Moscow remains dedicated to pursuing a peaceful resolution that upholds its national interests.
Peskov also addressed speculation about a potential meeting between Putin and Trump, saying no concrete plans have been discussed or scheduled.
He reiterated Russia’s interest in restoring relations with the United States—a process that began following a bilateral meeting in February—but admitted progress has been slow. “The normalization is moving at a sluggish pace. We’d like to see more momentum,” he said, stressing that both sides must contribute to advancing talks.
Although Trump has frequently expressed a desire to resolve the Ukraine conflict diplomatically and has spoken respectfully about Russia and Putin, his frustration has grown recently over the lack of progress. This has led him to issue renewed threats of sanctions.
Russian officials, however, have consistently rejected such ultimatums, arguing that they only serve to drag out the conflict.
