Trump inks executive order to Harness AI for Scientific Breakthroughs
The order frames AI as a critical arena in the global race for technological leadership and positions the United States to take a decisive role. It notes that “from the founding of our Republic, scientific discovery and technological innovation have driven American progress,” adding that current challenges require a “historic national effort.”
“This order launches the ‘Genesis Mission’ as a dedicated, coordinated national effort to unleash a new age of AI accelerated innovation and discovery that can solve the most challenging problems of this century,” the order states.
Under the initiative, the Department of Energy (DOE) will lead efforts to build an integrated American Science and Security Platform—a unified AI infrastructure combining national laboratory supercomputers, secure cloud systems, AI agents, predictive models, and access to the largest collection of federally curated scientific datasets.
The DOE has 90 days to map all federal computing and storage resources, including potential partnerships with industry, and 120 days to identify initial datasets and AI model assets. Within 270 days, the department is expected to demonstrate the first operational capabilities of the platform.
