Ghana Denounces U.S. Action Against Venezuela as UN Charter Breach
Accra voiced deep concerns over the unilateral deployment of force in a statement released Sunday by the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressing strong opposition to such actions.
"The government of the Republic of Ghana is alarmed at the unilateral and unauthorized invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States of America and the subsequent abduction of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in the early hours of Saturday," the statement said.
The ministry warned that these breaches of international law, territorial occupation attempts, and apparent efforts to seize control of petroleum assets pose severe threats to worldwide stability and the established global framework.
Remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump indicating Washington would "run" Venezuela evoke "reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era," according to the Ghanaian foreign ministry, which cautioned that such declarations establish a perilous precedent for international relations.
The statement urged immediate tensions reduction and the liberation of President Maduro and his spouse.
"The government of Ghana shall maintain and defend its long-held principled position against invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid, disregard for sovereignty and all forms of violation of international law," the statement added.
