Ilhan Omar Blames Trump’s “Hateful Rhetoric” for Surge in Death Threats
Speaking at a press conference in Minneapolis, Omar said her experience in public office shows a clear pattern linking the president’s words to heightened danger. “What the facts have shown since I've gotten into elected office is that every time the president of the United States has chosen to use hateful rhetoric to talk about me, and the community that I represent, my death threats skyrocket,” she said.
Her remarks came a day after she was assaulted during a town hall event. Omar said that since Trump returned to office, the intensity of his criticism has coincided with what she described as the highest level of death threats faced by any member of Congress.
Describing the incident, Omar said the attacker was motivated by frustration over immigration policies. “Last night, the man that attacked me was specifically upset that Trump's order to deport Somalis was not yielding enough deportations of Somalis. So he wanted to come get the person he thought was protecting the Somalis. Well, we are protected by the Constitution,” she told a cheering crowd at the Karmel Mall.
Authorities identified the suspect as 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak. According to officials, he stood up as Omar was addressing attendees, sprayed her with an unidentified substance from what appeared to be a syringe, and was quickly subdued.
Kazmierczak is currently being held at the Hennepin County Jail on a charge of third-degree assault. Police in Minneapolis said earlier that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and is leading the ongoing investigation.
