Trump Says to Enforce Voter ID Mandates for Midterms
"There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
The president escalated his push for electoral restrictions by accusing congressional Democrats of blocking identification and citizenship verification measures to enable fraudulent voting.
"The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections," he claimed, offering no supporting evidence.
Trump revealed he has examined alternative legal strategies to impose identification requirements unilaterally, bypassing the legislative process entirely. His proposed reforms extend beyond basic ID verification to include proof of U.S. citizenship for all voters and near-total elimination of mail-in balloting—exempting only military personnel, disabled citizens, the ill, and travelers.
In a follow-up Truth Social statement, the president signaled imminent executive action should lawmakers fail to advance his agenda.
"We cannot let the Democrats get away with no voter ID any longer ... If we can't get it through Congress, there are Legal reasons why this scam is not permitted. I will be presenting them shortly, in the form of an Executive Order," Trump wrote.
The announcement sets up a potential constitutional confrontation, as election administration traditionally falls under state jurisdiction with federal oversight limited to specific civil rights protections. Whether Trump can legally mandate nationwide voter identification through executive authority remains legally uncertain and would likely trigger immediate court challenges.
