Trump Cancels Key Tariffs After Supreme Court Ruling

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order halting the collection of certain additional ad valorem tariffs previously enacted under emergency trade powers, following a major setback at the nation’s highest court.

The move comes days after the US Supreme Court delivered a 6-3 decision invalidating most of Trump’s sweeping tariff actions. The justices ruled that the president overstepped his authority by invoking a statute intended for national emergencies to justify broad trade levies.

"In light of recent events, the additional ad valorem duties imposed pursuant to IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act) ... shall no longer be in effect and, as soon as practicable, shall no longer be collected," the White House said
.
The order directs all relevant federal departments and agencies to immediately cease collecting the affected duties. It also instructs officials to amend the Harmonized Tariff Schedule as necessary to reflect the changes.

However, the administration made clear that not all trade restrictions are being rolled back. The directive specifies that other measures — including the Feb. 20 temporary import surcharge and the suspension of duty-free de minimis treatment — will remain in force.

Officials stressed that the decision applies solely to the additional ad valorem duties imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Tariffs implemented under separate authorities, such as Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act and Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, are unaffected.

The ruling marks a significant shift in U.S. trade policy, narrowing the scope of executive authority over tariffs while preserving other mechanisms still in place.
